City and Regional Planning
is an architecture, interior design, planning, and renovation firm based in San Francisco, California. Our Senior Principals Dana Merker, AIA and Jay Hendler, AIA have been integral team members for over two decades, initially working together at Patri Merker Architects, successor firm to Whisler-Patri, one of the Bay Area's leading architectural practices established in 1963. Merker Architects is recognized for its broad range of design services from due diligence, planning, and government approvals for new and existing uses, to all phases of architectural design and management. The firm and its individual associates have received numerous professional awards honoring the high quality of work performed and is committed to sustainability and hands-on project management.
Merker Architects approaches each project, new or existing, with sustainability in mind. We give our clients the option of designing projects using either GreenPoint or LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Designating systems. We continue to study and implement technological advances in building programming, design and construction.
Intelligent and green materials and their effect on life-cycle costs are factored into each project according to budget and owner objectives. Buildings’ life cycles are frequently cut short when surroundings evolve and the building’s original use no longer makes sense. Merker Architects has for over 40 years helped extend that life cycle by providing adaptive re-use services.
Working closely with an owner and engineering team, the firm has transformed building spaces for new uses such as converting office buildings and dormitories into hotels, ground floor and basement spaces into retail use and examined warehouses for new uses. We have helped our clients acquire unique spaces in unique buildings at lower than new construction costs.
The recently completed InterContinental San Francisco sets the standard among premium green hotels in the San Francisco Bay Area and has achieved LEED Gold Certification under the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (LEED EBOM) category. The hotel is the third largest in the nation to receive this distinction.
